Ghost Towns
Idaho has its share of ghost towns that offer not only a fun day of family bonding but great photos! This past summer we took my mom and grama up to the one that is closest to our house. It’s called Silver City and you can really only get to it in the summer. So on a terrible hot day while halfway through pregnancy, we made the long and very bumpy and very windy trip.
But it was so worth it. Immediately upon coming into town you feel you have stepped back in time. There are only a handful of people that live there in the summer and only a ‘guard’ there during the winter. Most buildings are closed to the public as they are private residences.
The hotel and other ’service’ buildings are open but not all the time. We happened to be able to eat in the hotel restaurant and it was again like stepping back in time. We spent a couple hours wandering around town looking at the buildings, reading the guide books, shopping in the little store, and of course taking tons of photos.
This photo is of the Lady of Tears Catholic Church. Over the years it has been just about every denomination but currently is Catholic. There is an annual service at the church held in late summer that all are welcome to attend. Seeing it on top of the hill on the ‘outskirts’ of this town was amazing. I felt transported back in time.
Towards the end of summer they have an Open House where many more of the buildings are opened up to the public for viewing. I had hoped to make it back but we couldn’t. Next year we plan on making it there to see even more history.
